I spent the Memorial Day weekend attending to my booth at the Juan de Fuca Festival. It's a four day event with loads of entertainment all four days, at several different venues around town. I saw a lot of families with passes that allowed them in to all of the events all weekend. I think it's a fantastic opportunity for parents to introduce their kids to entertainment from around the world.
Several of the local schools bussed kids in on Friday to take part in it. The busses were unloading right behind where I was setting up my booth early Friday morning, and it was fun to hear their excited voices as they made their way past me to the auditorium.
All in all it was a successful weekend. Although I could have completely done without Sunday. I woke up sick to my stomach in the morning, ugh. Not good timing. But I was to find out that was not the worst part of the day. Oh no. The wind started blowing early, and continued to blow in huge gusts that lifted the roof of my booth canopy up and off several times. And it continued alllllllllllllll day.
Not so much on Sunday. Things were blowing off everywhere. It was basic survival mode. The bright spot of the day was the vendors across the aisle from us, Don and Ardis. Ardis makes the most beautiful Women's jackets, under the label 'Originals by Mrs. D'. And they travel around and do 50 (yes, 50!) shows a year. They have it down to a science and were so very helpful and generous, giving us lots of ideas for a better set up. We will definitely be ready for next time. Dr. K is already ordering the things he'll need to bolster our booth.
Most of the vendors we spoke to said those were the worst conditions they had ever encountered. So I guess the good news is I've survived the worst of it, being sick and contending with hurricane force winds. Plus, we were lucky to not see even one raindrop. Yay!
I spent yesterday unpacking, recuperating and regrouping. And I'm ready to get back to work today, but plan on taking a real day off on Friday with my Girlfriend, for some real 'girl time'.
